Tiki mania! The art of wood carving has existed in Polynesia for centuries. As in other mythological religions, ancient Polynesians believed that different elements were created by different gods. These sculptures, or "tikis" as we know them, are the representation in thousands of different images.
When Westerners arrived in Polynesia to expand their religious beliefs, and put a stop to all pagan worship, many tikis were destroyed. Only a few original pieces remain today.
The surfing rage of the 60s brought tikis back into popularity with their images painted on surfboards.
Dennis Mathewson, who lives in Honolulu, is passionate about tiki art. By creating this series of soft and solvent-resistant stencils, he wanted to share with you his love for tikis and introduce you to this ancestral art.
